About 200 people gathered anxiously around the televisions at Maxwell’s Restaurant on Friday to watch as hometown Crested Butte steeplechase runner Emma Coburn raced for a berth on the U.S. Olympic team. Maybe Emma could hear the hollers all the way in Eugene, Oregon – certainly the folks out on Elk Avenue could.

Luckily for her nervous fans, Emma left little suspense; within seconds of the start at the Olympic Trials, she had pulled ahead, and she widened her lead with each hurdle and water jump to finish well ahead of the remaining runners. Crested Butte will now have its first summer Olympian in August’s London competition.

Now that the summer Crested Butte Magazine has rolled off the press (and been posted online), it’s fun to see people pass by the stands, then do a double take to look a little longer at the cover. It tells a bit of a story, which was just what photographer Raynor Czerwinski intended.
