Attention, Crested Butte forty-somethings. Have you seen the 40s stick? Is it still out there making its mysterious rounds?

For you youngsters of 39 years or less, the 40s stick is a random piece of driftwood that Myles Rademan found on a distant beach a quarter century ago. He lugged it home to Crested Butte, carved on it a little and put his initials on it. Soon afterward, when friend Billy Folger turned 40, Myles gave him the walking stick in anticipation of the infirmity soon to follow their shared four-decade mark. Billy, a woodworker, did a little whittling and initial-carving of his own and bestowed the stick upon the next friend to hit the big 4-0. A tradition was born.
