When I e-mailed Paul about how he captured such a close-up portrait of the fox, here’s the message he sent in reply: "This vixen
had a den on top of Maxwell’s last winter. (I believe this is a vixen, though it would have been rather awkward to check.) I found her stationed
outside The Last Steep holding court for a retinue of tourists.
"The fox was standing on the raised snowbank and I was in
the pathway cut between the snowbanks, which put us facing each other eye to eye. It may be that she saw her reflection in my lens. In any case, she
walked right up and greeted me like she might acknowledge another fox."
If you can turn the page on that engaging vixen,
there's a lot to read and gaze upon in this issue of the Crested Butte Magazine. (By the way, another curious fox shows up in the article on
Crested Butte’s Frosty Fox Curling Club.) Let us know what you think – and send us your fox stories!
