I ate breakfast at the Timberline this morning (yep, they've added a bakery breakfast; killer "quiche muffins" and blueberry scones). Proprietor Darlene and I started talking about our kids, who grew up together in this small town. Yes, her younger daughter is Heidi Montag of "The Hills" reality-TV fame. And, yes, the MTV crew was just in Crested Butte and filmed a mother-daughter blow-up over Heidi's recent plastic surgeries.
I won't relate what Darlene said; hey, you can see it all for yourself when the Crested Butte segment airs. Our conversation did have me wondering what it would feel like to have a tough, heart-to-heart talk with my kid with the cameras rolling all around me. Especially knowing that the footage would be edited, reconfigured and televised for millions of people to view and judge.
How does all this relate to the Crested Butte Magazine? We did a little newsy item about Heidi in the magazine when "The HIlls" first aired. Later I passed on an invitation via Darlene to interview Heidi for the Crested Butte Magazine. I haven't heard back on that.
Some would argue that Heidi is hardly the best role model right now, catching the limelight (much of it unflattering) mostly for her plastic surgeries and what people perceive as her addiction to attention. But I don't care to either idolize or mock Heidi. I don't want to talk to her about her medical procedures or her love life. I want to talk to the Heidi who was once that playful, spirited little girl at Stepping Stones Children's Center and the Crested Butte Community School.
I might ask Heidi some of the same questions I ask those who go to work in Haiti or Afghanistan (okay, I can hear you snort). She has jumped from our little mountain town to a foreign world filled with its own types of danger, beauty and cruelty. I'd like to know what this world looks like through the eyes of someone who grew up in Crested Butte, and what she is learning from being there. The invitation stands, but no cameras, please.

Heidi has stood by her family and, mostly, her town. She also has brought her sister, Holly, into her successful venture; and, her parents ( including Cowboy Bill) and Skye. What she does with her $$ is her own affair. Get it while you can, Heidi!
I always stand up for Heidi when people talk trash about her, and I also know that the negative things people say are actually what empowers her to play her role on T.V. No matter what I hear or see on T.V., I will always have her back. Cheers Heidi
