Yea! Even 29 years after I arrived starry-eyed in Crested Butte, I still get that little adrenaline rush when the snow starts falling and the ski lifts power up and the winter Crested Butte Magazine rolls off the press. Winter isn’t easy around here, but it’s full of magic.
Whether you live on Elk Avenue or on the other side of the globe, I hope you feel that little thrill when you browse through the winter issue of the magazine.
As we were working on this issue, a couple of themes emerged. The most obvious one was how good can grow out of bad, with the Max Mancini and Jeff Rogers articles as examples. Right when life was supposed to be full of promises unfolding, these two young men ran smack into troubles that few of us will face in our lifetimes. Jeff lost his arm and almost died in an explosion in Iraq. Max barely survived the accident that killed his fiancée and unborn child. Both men, in their own ways, have struggled their way back toward healing with Crested Butte’s help, and both are passing that help on to other people. What inspiring people. As we noted about the alpine winter, their stories aren’t easy, but they’re full of magic.
On a lighter note, we’ve also packed this issue with fun photos and articles to reflect this quirky town. I hope you get some smiles and chuckles out of the magazine.
I’ll use this blog space every week or so to update the stories featured in the magazine and talk about the life and times of Crested Butte. Feel free to get in touch with your comments about the magazine or this amazing place it honors.
